Idea #1: Provide cable guidance away from pinch points.  Mocked-up with 1/2" copper tubing clamp.

Back in stowed position

190 degrees clockwise

Idea #2: Use spring to keep tension on cable.  Mocked-up with some wire wrapped around nose.

270 degrees counter-clockwise
